I’m not a huge comedy person, but when an author does it right, I really enjoy it. These books got it perfect:
- Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
- Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
- the Nursery Crimes books by Jasper Fforde
- Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
- The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett
- Gothic Charm School by Jillian Venters
- The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis (though I doubt it’s meant to be humor…)
- The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde
- Fat Girl Walking by Brittany Gibbons
- Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

Totally agree about Good Omens, one of the funniest books ever. I just read Pratchett’s Bromeliad Trilogy and laughed out loud many times, it was brilliant.
And I would add Three Men in a Boat. Might have to post my own list!

The Monk is not supposed to be funny, this I know for sure. But I see your point. I rank Tristram Shandy by Lawerence Sterne as one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. Roddy Doyle’s Barrytown books are also very funny: The Van, The Commitment and The Snapper. The parts of David Copperfield with Mr. Micawber always make me smile, too.

I really enjoyed Carry On! Much more than I expected I would. And Wilde is always good for a life – Ernest is hilarious. One book I remember laughing out loud to was Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs.

Well, it’s an autobiography… made up of all sorts of moments. But some of it is outrageously funny.
