After most of her family dies, Lorelei is married off to the country’s top war alchemist, Nephele. The hope is that Nephele can discover and cure whatever curse is killing off Lorelei’s family line.
Honestly, I didn’t really get into the politics and magic of this book. Other parts intrigued me more – the lesbian arranged marriage; the pregnancy that was engineered through magic to be both women’s child; the texts Lorelei keeps receiving from her dead mother. It was spooky and interesting, the mystery of the curse intriguing, and the relationship that slowly grows between the two women quite sweet.
It was a short book, and I have a feeling I would have gotten deeper into it if it had been longer and the magic more fleshed out. However, for a five-hour audiobook, this was a nice listen. It was read by Mollie Stark and Xe Sands, who both did a lovely job.
PS – If you saw my last post re: the classic editor, WordPress apparently already brought this back so we can use it again. It reappeared about 24 hours after it disappeared for me, so I’ve deleted the last post and hopefully I won’t have to deal with this garbage again at least for a few more years.
