Jordan has his life together. He’s good at his job, has good relationships with his family members, and he’s sure that one day soon, he’ll fall in love. When the right person comes along, he’ll know. Never mind that he doesn’t seem to experience attraction like other people. Never mind that the only person that feels right is an old friend that Jordan has been dreaming about since their first kiss back in their teen years. Never mind that said friend has actively rejected him. It’s cool. There will be another right person. And in the meantime, Jordan can work alongside his old friend without things between them getting heated, yeah?

I know that’s a long description. My brain isn’t entirely online as I type this. Essentially, this is a story of identity, set in a friends-to-lovers type situation. It isn’t often that you see demisexuality represented in traditional media. That’s probably part of why Jordan struggles to understand why he’s only ever felt attraction to two people, both of whom were friends long before his attraction grew. He’s never known anyone like himself, and he feels like something is wrong with him because he doesn’t know how to classify himself. He doesn’t even know if he’s straight or gay or pan or whatever. And to get over his discomfort, he tries to bury himself in work, to become the best at everything he does as a type of compensation for what he can’t do/understand.

It was a good story, and the type of story that I think needs more exposure. Those of us with lesser known/understood identities should get to see ourselves represented outside of niche spaces, too.

(Note: I am not demisexual. But I identify as agender, which is often not even known within queer spaces. You can get a million different flags at a Pride vendor, but only one out of twenty vendors will have an agender flag. It’s getting a bit more exposure recently, but it’s still very, very niche.)

Performance: This audiobook was read by James Cavenaugh. TBH, I wasn’t a huge fan of the performance. While his gung-ho type vocal mannerisms fit Jordan’s personality, I’m just not a fan of that kind of style at all.
