Today’s Top Ten Tuesday asks us to list our top authors that we read for the first time in 2017. I read 28 new-to-me authors in 2017, and I don’t quite have ten new “bests,” so here’s my short list of new-to-me authors that I really liked, in no particular order:
1. Frances Hardinge – After reading A Face Like Glass, I was hooked. I read one more by Hardinge last year and it was also very good. For the first time in quite some time, I’m interested in reading an author’s backlist!
2. Robert Jackson Bennett – It’s too soon to tell if Bennett will become a new favorite author, but I really loved his writing in the Divine Cities trilogy. If his other works are that well done, I’ll be happy to read on!
3. Zen Cho – Again, it’s too soon to say whether Cho will become a favorite. However, I adored Sorcerer to the Crown and I’m looking forward to further books.
4. Liane Moriarty – I’ve developed a sort of love-hate relationship with Moriarty. Her books suck me in, sometimes too deeply, but there’s no denying the woman can write and her stories interest me!
5. Kiersten White – This is another case of “only read one series by this author,” but the Conquerer’s Saga is so good that I will definitely try more from White when possible.

I read White for the first time this year as well. I enjoyed parts and others not so much. Though I do still need to read the next book. A Face Like Glass has caught my attention. Adding it to my TBR.

I read like ten pages of The Lie Tree and couldn’t stand it so I’m not sure if I’ll ever try another of her books, especially because so many people liked that one.

While I can’t say if you’ll like A Face Like Glass, I can say that the writing and storytelling was far superior to The Lie Tree. I’m not sure what about TLT made you hate it, I just know that when I read it, it felt far more simple and less-nuanced than AFLG. I liked the book, but it far paled in comparison. If I’d read it first, I’m not sure I’d have finished it, nor would I have really gone on to read more of Hardinge’s books.

This is good to know. Jenny also just reviewed A Skinful of Shadows and it sounded good so I might eventually be convinced to try one of these two. 😉

I agree with Robert Jackson Bennett! I have read some of Kiersten White’s other works and enjoyed them, although her Lada trilogy is by far my favorite of hers!

I didn’t realize she had other ones out. For some reason I was thinking this was a debut series. Time to go check if anything else on her list appeals to me!

I have heard of these authors (most of them) but haven’t read any. Laine Moriarty is definitely on my TBR!! Great list 🙂

She seems to be kinda hit-or-miss for me, but I have certainly enjoyed some of her books!
